I was invited by Bleri Lleshi and he was actually the one who organised this debate: there were very interesting people at the panel like: Omar Ba and Rita Vanobberghen.
We were like maximum 30 persons there, I was surprised because we were a lot of young people. The debate was only in Dutch and it was based on an essay that Bleri had written about engagement (you can read it in the three languages, but this one is in English).
He introduced the debate, so if you guys are interested I also have a video but it is only in Dutch.
A lot of good things were said but if you read the essay it will be like a summary :D
After Bleri Omar Ba talked: he lived actually in Congo at first and then he lived in France and then, finally, he came to live here in Belgium. He said a lot of beautiful things but with my little brain I only remember a few things:
"As an young boy in Congo, when you see your history at school: the slavery and so on, you're like 'ow this happened to my country and still is', you grow up and you see that there are a lot of things that are not fare"
I really liked listening to him because he explained a lot of anecdotes and I learned a lot of them, he was like:
"I'm sorry I'm a real African I go from one story to another" :D
But Omar Ba you were perfect !!
After Omar Ba it was time to Rita Vanobberghen to talk and she was like: after Bleri and Omar I don't think there is a lot to say left. But I can assure you she gave the evening a funny ending.
Rita Vanobberghen is a doctor and she has helped in countries with 'Artsen zonder grenzen'
She explained a few things she did during her youth, the help she gave, how she felt and so on.
She also helps people who has no papers, she helped lately the hunger strikers ^^
What I remember she said was:
"As I white woman in a country (I'm sorry I don't remember which country it was anymore xs !!) you see bombs fall and then you're like 'OMG they can't do that' (but yes it does happen) and then you see the people run everywhere and be scared and hide them self and then you are there you try to nurse them, you go run with them because in your back you have the rebels after you, it were hard times. And that for me, it was my engagement during those years."
Her eccentric outfit and her energy was just AM-AA-ZING!!
To end her speech she explained in a funny way, what engagement was and should be for her. She brought three childish images with her: a heart, a brain and a feet. She said engagement for her was a combination of the three.
Afterwards there were the questions, that often are the most important :D and also very interesting!!
Some things I wrote during the debate:
Bleri: It's not enough to give critic, you also have to propose a solution
Rita: A right is not something you have to go on streets to fight for. That's something that has to be
given. + Health for everyone?!! Also here in Belgium ?! (free nursery + medication!)
Omar: What happened 30 years ago to us happens now also in Belgium and it's only now that people see how bad it actually is. How bad the social economical problems actually are and what a capitalistic society actually really does to the people
Here are some things I wrote during the questions:
- The system limits, conditions the organisations that exist and that restricts the changes that we want to bring
- Diversity in the commissions --> divers visions etc.
- Gelwar
- The media is no longer the only informer, everyone can be a potential informer now
- Rita: there is a hate-love relation between the media; because when we came in the media we were happy but at the other side ..
- Media facilitates to make our own authorities, to chose which info we take and which one we chose to believe at.
- Bleri: how to make the mass conscious:
- By informing people
- By politicizing people
- By working together to find alternatives (but unfortunately there's to less done in the past)
- One person makes creativity in the collectivism (no individualism!
- Illegal is unlawful = unconsciously it does a lot to a person
fOILà that was the evening, it's just to give you an idea of what it was about, hope you guys liked it
